“It isn’t the mountain ahead that wears you out:  it’s the grain of sand in your shoe.”  ~Robert W. Service

Recently at our Salon for Astrological Discourse we discussed the mythological and astrological Eris, a dwarf planet discovered in 2005.

It’s always worth the time to note the events that are going on (around the planet) at the time of astronomical discoveries.  There’s an inherent connection (as above, so below) and current events will mirror the theme.  This is how astrologers advanced the science/art thru out the ages.

In 2004-5 the headlines got bolder, larger, and louder.

Hurricane Katrina and the 7.6 Earthquake killing 73,000 in Pakistan were devastating events.

The media grew to global proportions becoming more pervasive  and less persuasive.

The Iraq war was in full swing.

And, righeriswithapplet along with those major events came the unexpected Academy Award Winner, Million-Dollar Baby featuring a skinny Hillary Swank in boxing gear.

Eris arrives.  The milliondollarbabyoscarfeminine warrior archetype let us know beginning in 2004-05  that she is in our consciousness now and will be reckoned with.   Before it’s  discovery a planet still impacts our history, but it’s after we have named and claimed the new orbiting body that it becomes *visible* and a part of our consciousness.  In 2005 she had made her way to 20 degrees of Aries.  She caught my attention in 2007 when I first blogged about her.  Here’s a link to other posts about Eris on this website.

It takes Eris 557 earth years to complete her orbit.  This keeps her in a zodiac sign for many generations of humans.  We’ve been enduring her wrath in Aries since 1923 and she’ll remain in Aries until 2047.  Aries is fire, masculine, and action oriented…. exactly the kind of feisty climate Eris enjoys.

In the Greek myths, Eris was a trouble maker who always felt snubbed.  The rest of the pantheon avoided her because they knew how easily provoked she was.  And, when she was provoked she would create chaos, dissent, and rivalry among everyone around her.  Astrologically, this goddess of disruption is particularly good at creating family discord…that’s where she’s ‘at her best’.  Her small, subtle actions frequently have a way of mushrooming into something huge and disruprive….like pulling out that one little thread and suddenly the whole garment unravels.

On July 10, 2017  Mars squared Eris and the headlines of the day regarding our First Family couldn’t have been a more perfect expression of Eris in action.  For those interested in Mundane Astrology, I remind you that Eris is at 8 degrees Aries in the chart of the USA.

still,

May all beings be healthy.  May all beings be happy.  May all beings live in peace, no matter what they’re given.

Om shanti, shanti, shantihi.

—stay tuned for more on Eris.

Astrology Eris

Tugging_at_your_harp_stringsWow!  Sunday was my first-ever storytelling performance with a harp, and the audience was delighted.  I recognized some serious applause and I was told later that everyone was talking about me, although, I don’t think it was really me they were talking about….it was really about the harp.  Once again  I forgot how utterly mesmerizing this instrument is to most people….and me too, of course.  For all the worry, anxiety, and practice….the music just flowed exactly the way it was supposed to.

In the first person, I told the story of Chiron’s Birth and why he came to be living in a cave with his harp.

This centaur, known as The Wounded Healer, is a mythological story that has captured my attention for the past 20 years or so and I’m frequently referring to his symbolism in my lectures/workshops and yoga therapy classes.  He’s got a powerful story for our times, for sure.  So many of us  feel wounded, shamed, abandoned and just plain old sad.    I’ve blogged a bit about Chiron, the asteroid, and this post gives a pretty good overview of the astrological Chiron.   Today Chiron is traveling thru Pisces which supports healing thru music.

This was the first time, in a long time, that rather than teach or facilitate,  I practiced Performance & (intentional) Drama.    I was totally unprepared for the sheer joy that I experienced after it was over and thruout the following day.  It was wonderful to find a new, creative outlet that brings together so much of what I love to do, and still challenges me in new ways.  But four minutes is nothing when your hands are on the strings, you know?

Already, I am planning Chapter 2, and expanding my story to maybe 10-15 minutes?  Who knows?  For now, Storytelling is a new hobby/activity for me and I am so excited to see where it takes me.

chiron2.jpgThe asteroid Chiron is named after a mythological centaur (horse/man) who became a great healer/teacher. In astrological mythology, Chiron is the Wounded Healer and has many talents. One story tells how he became immortal and lived a life of suffering after a fatal(?) wound from a poisoned arrow. In the attempt to heal himself,  Chiron learned the magic of herbs, gems, astrology, and  other ancient healing techniques.

In our natal horoscopes, the placement of Chiron describes the circumstances of our unhealed wounds, the ones that require an integrated approach to understand. These are the wounds that are invisible to the world and sometimes even invisible to ourselves. The emotions of shame and humiliation will give you a clue as to where these wounds are located. By the time we reach our early 50’s we have had numerous opportunities to confront these wounds and perhaps we were successful in transforming this lead into gold. Also around the age of 50, the asteroid Chiron returns to the same place he was in when you were born….a Chiron Return in the astrological language. This might be considered a ‘last chance’ for healing in this lifetime the wound that binds you. It’s also a time (after 50) to share your knowledge with others and become the teacher/counselor/healer who helps others with wounds similar to your own, just as Chiron did in mythology.

The Heirophant

The success of the 12-step format is one example of how wounded healers have helped others create happy lives from painful pasts. The Wounded Healer contributes to the whole in ways that can’t be measured. We all have Chiron somewhere in our psyche. It is an archetype that the whole human race feels. The location of Chiron in your personal astrological birthmap can shed some light on the wound that follows you everywhere and has the potential to become your greatest strength. Consult your astrologer/yoga teacher for guidance on this topic.
