Tugging_at_your_harp_stringsWow!  Sunday was my first-ever storytelling performance with a harp, and the audience was delighted.  I recognized some serious applause and I was told later that everyone was talking about me, although, I don’t think it was really me they were talking about….it was really about the harp.  Once again  I forgot how utterly mesmerizing this instrument is to most people….and me too, of course.  For all the worry, anxiety, and practice….the music just flowed exactly the way it was supposed to.

In the first person, I told the story of Chiron’s Birth and why he came to be living in a cave with his harp.

This centaur, known as The Wounded Healer, is a mythological story that has captured my attention for the past 20 years or so and I’m frequently referring to his symbolism in my lectures/workshops and yoga therapy classes.  He’s got a powerful story for our times, for sure.  So many of us  feel wounded, shamed, abandoned and just plain old sad.    I’ve blogged a bit about Chiron, the asteroid, and this post gives a pretty good overview of the astrological Chiron.   Today Chiron is traveling thru Pisces which supports healing thru music.

This was the first time, in a long time, that rather than teach or facilitate,  I practiced Performance & (intentional) Drama.    I was totally unprepared for the sheer joy that I experienced after it was over and thruout the following day.  It was wonderful to find a new, creative outlet that brings together so much of what I love to do, and still challenges me in new ways.  But four minutes is nothing when your hands are on the strings, you know?

Already, I am planning Chapter 2, and expanding my story to maybe 10-15 minutes?  Who knows?  For now, Storytelling is a new hobby/activity for me and I am so excited to see where it takes me.

Woke up to the news of the large-scale earthquaking in Chile.  No doubt there will be many, more events to come right up until April 22 (at the very least). as the alignment of the planets reminds us just who is Boss.  Now, sit for a few moments  and watch where your mind goes after reading that.  Then, take a long, slow, deep breath.

Chant Om.

(Go to a yoga class and ask the teacher, “why om?”)

If I could sum up everything I’ve learned over the past few decades and reduce it down to  2 words, today those words would be:

 Practice Kindness.

…more later.  New Class starts today, 4:30pm.  We’re gonna talk about Om.

I can hear it.  It’s on the street behind my house.  My body feels the sound and immediately I get sad/angry/tense.  Sometimes, it actually takes my mind 10-30 minutes to label the sound.  My denial is strong, because, even though it is a familiar sound, I just don’t want to think about another tree being chainsawed and mauled in my neighborhood.

My friends and pals growing up would call me a tree-hugger, but it wasn’t necessarily said kindly.  It made me feel different and strange.  And, it was true.  I loved trees, and just like Julia Butterfly-Hill, I could become an activist for these amazing plants.

fearnotI recently attended Gary Christian’s weekend workshop with the Astrological Society of Princeton   I have a long history with this group and it was great to re-connect with other astrologers.  Gary spoke as Gary speaks, I’ve heard him before, he is brilliant, and sometimes I understand him, and sometimes I don’t, and yesterday it all worked for me just fine!  I am re-inspired to look at some old techniques, again, but for now in a new way.

Astrology continues to be the most reliable clock/map I’ve found.  Divine guidance, as well as practical solutions are always available in the language of the cosmos.  Astrology is real, it has been proven;  it’s the astrologers that provoke our culture’s disrespect for the science/art.   I agree with Gary on that point.   Regardless, it was a wonderful feast for my hungry intellect and I am excited to feel my left brain wake up.

Anyway, ’tis true, from yet another source, that we are in-deed in-store for very, very, very, big change.

That said, it’s time to prepare for this weeks yoga classes.   Jai bhagwan.

Recently I read somewhere, that it takes 10, 000 hours of  consistent & persistent study to achieve Mastery over the subject at hand.  The author of these remarks meant it quite literally, and meant for us all to add up the hours spent in serious study, and practice.  If you are fortunate enough to attend a school of formal learning, they will do the math for you and assign you some letters  to add after your name. This may make living in this new-normal world easier, or not.  Time will tell.

The first book I was assigned to read when I began my yoga teacher training in 1998, was titled  Mastery by George Leonard, and for me, the bookworm,  it was a surprising and disappointing assignment.  I was burning to dig into ancient indian texts on how to achieve enlightenment and change my life, and stuff like that.  Mastery was small stuff.  I am grateful that my thinking has evolved since I achieved my 10,000 hours.

With Saturn in Virgo residing in my third house, natally, I’ve always been quite picky about  subject matters regarding intelligence, mental health, communications, education, and siblings.  You will find me quite firm in my opinions regardless of how quickly said opinions change.  And, change again.  Mutable signs are like that.

Then there are the ten thousand sorrows and ten thousand joys that the Asian Buddhists write of.   Why 10,000?  Why not 11, 001?

I had a major spiritual awakening during a vedic math class once.  I’ve never forgotten that moment and it has been a source of delight in my memory cells ever since.  Numbers are a deep source of symbolic information, yes?

Wikipedia informs me that there is a 10,000 year clock , conceived in 1986 and currently being built by a group of new-normal-wizkids including  Jeff Bezos , of Amazon, who donated 42 million towards this project!  It’s called The Clock of the Long Now.

How appropriate.

But why, 10,000 years?  Why not 11,001?

Other details to consider:

  • 10,000 years = 864,000 ,000 seconds
  • 14,400, 000 minutes
  • 240,000 hours
  • 1428 weeks (rounded down)

Then, sadly, of course,  there is that ever vigilant, awake & ready army of 10,000 , which has been mythologized, dramatized, and institutionalized  since 400 BC.

But the most recent incident of 10,000, the inspiration for this blog post, came in the mail from Amazon.com.  It’s my new pedometer!  It counts my steps. According to the new-normal-thinking of 2014, we need to take 10,000 steps a day if we want to lose weight, 6, 000 steps to maintain one’s fitness, etc. etc., and blah, blah, blah.  I’ll let you know how it goes.

10,000?

And, last,  just for fun : 10,000 Maniacs.

May you live for 10,000 years.  Om shanti, shanti, shantihi.

Mala BeadsCall it luck.  Call it politics.  Call it whatever you want.  I call it a godwink that I didn’t get a ticket for a moving violation today.

I was ‘cruising’ along a wide open waterfront street in a local town when I spotted the police car.  I looked down, and I was going a gentle 40mph on a 25 mph road. Oh! God! No!  But, I didn’t get the ticket for speeding.  I also didn’t get a ticket for not having my (newly re-newed) car insurance with me. That fine would have been expensive.   However, I did indeed receive a ticket,  for obstruction, and he pointed to the old, faded, sun-bleached malabeads that have hung off my rear-view mirror for over 20 years.

Immediately I felt saved by the god of my understanding.  I smiled at Patrolman P., took the beads off the mirror and then handed them to him as a gift, explaining at the same time that they were a gift to me from a beloved swami and that I felt it only right to pass them along to him.

He smiled at me, his eyes were twinkly, and I could tell he was happy to only serve me with a ‘mild’ offense. He refused my gift and we said goodbye.

Om shanti, peace to all beings.

ps.  I put them back a few miles down the road.  🙂

I love books.  Which means I also love libraries.  Many years ago I experienced a past-life regression where I saw/felt myself as a librarian in ancient Greece.   I saw a room filled with scrolls, and I had responsibilities regarding such scrolls.

So much explained in a single moment of recall.  Something felt right and true and important at that moment.

I try to visit libraries where ever I travel.  It’s incredibly stimulating, inspiring, and sometimes awe-provoking to be in energy of so many minds.

This ltrinity-library-postcard.jpgink is what inspired me to come out of hibernation and blog a bit. If you like libraries check it out.  Click on picture.

swami kripalu….where I do volunteer work at least three times a year.  This trip I worked as a facilitator and hatha yoga teacher.  The program was called the Inner Quest Intensive and I have been a part of this amazing ‘production’ since ’99.  Here’s a post I wrote after another such trip about 5 years ago.

The world really needs this program.  Those of us who facilitate transformation and healing for others know this.   I am completely filled with love, gratitude, and kindness once again as I continue to live and teach yoga.

This time I came home inspired to develop and deliver an experiential program with transformational possibilities of my own.  My plan is to use the natal chart as a launchpad.  We’ll address all the planets of our solar system with the intention of  expanding our self-awareness and self-knowledge. Interested ?  Contact me at idafae@gmail.com.

Tomorrow is the first of a series of experiential workshops using the astrological natal chart as tool for self-inquiry and self-development.  It’s been quite a ride for me personally, as I have chosen to follow the stars for most of my life.

These days Uranus is conjunct my mid-heaven and moving in towards a conjunction with the  NN.  Neptune is conjunct SN natally. Obviously, things are changing.  Unknown territory looms ahead for me.  Thanks to the stars,  Pluto is finally past my moon.  Om shanti.

The outer planets, along with all things lunar, have captured my attention for decades.  As a working astrologer who reads charts for individuals, I am also particularly interested in Time, time-measurement, time-management, time-keeping, and what I call Time-Scaping, which is what happens once we have mastered our personal relationship with time and create a life-rhythm which is sustainable.  The cycles of the planets along with the orbit of the moon provide the raw data that is needed.

Anyway, I digress.  Tomorrow’s workshop will tackle the idea that the Lunar Nodes represent our Soul’s Purpose in this incarnation. We’ll look at the nodes in our respective natal charts and discuss it.  Then we’ll take our new found information and practice being our ‘true selves’ using various yogic techniques.

I’ve been doing this work for a lifetime already, and I still get excited when I see the look of “enlightenment” come over someone’s face.  That sudden expression brought on by the combination of insight, understanding, and joy is unmistakeable.
