Where were you in the Fall of 1982?  What was going on in your personal life?  What was going on in the world?  How old were you?

In November of that year Pluto and Saturn made a conjunction at 27 Libra.  Where is 27 Libra in your natal chart?  Is anything in your natal chart at 27 degrees?  Look at the cusps and angles too.

This is a good place to begin our self-discovery lessons in Saturn and Pluto.  We need some data for: discussion, transforming, healing, fixing, and most importantly, understanding and seeing a big picture view.  Answering those questions will help as we approach another Pluto/Saturn conjunction/cycle in January, 2020.  It’s a big deal and we astrologers have been holding our breath as we watch the state of the world change (again) before our eyes.  That’s where yoga helps this astrologer.  B R F W A, in Kripalu talk.  Breathe. Relax. Feel. Watch. Allow.         All is well.

There are lots of articles floating around the internet speaking of this culture-changing time and I encourage you to read them.  Every astrologer has their own specialty.  The mundane astrologers are doing a great job tracking the economic/political/geographical/cultural shifts that are going on.  I can recommend some good ones to read if you’re interested in the mundane.

As for me, I want to know how to live thru these cycles, with peace, serenity and reaping the best possible outcome.   It isn’t easy and it’s not always fun,  but the rewards are sure and deep.  Bringing your chart to life and seeing the symbolism play out in your everyday life is a great way to stay connected to something that is much greater than me.

Yoga teaches us how to be present in the moment.  Through practice and study we notice that how we think/feel/act in the world is always connected to some deeper cellular/tissue/muscle memory on the inside.   By choosing yoga practices that reflect the symbolism of current transits we get to release, in the moment, any tensions building up unconsciously.  In addition, we experience thru yoga nidra, breathwork, and meditation the release of old tensions held in the body from past lives., which is a whole different conversation having  to do with spiritual beliefs.

But  first, there’s more astrology to look at .

During the ’82 cycle Pluto & Saturn were alone in Libra.  In 2020  the south node of the moon, Ketu in the Vedic system, is tracking with them both in Capricorn, adding an entirely different dimension to our experience of this cycle.  Anytime the Lunar Nodes are involved in an aspect it increases the likelihood that an individuals karma is activated during this period.  I am in my Ketu MahaDasa in  the Vedic system and it’s a fascinating time to engage in self-study.  More reason to use yoga for processing.

In our dharma/karma workshops we investigate our natal placement of the lunar nodes and try to discern how they show up in our lives and more importantly how to learn from them, isn’t that what it’s *all* about, anyway, to learn, grow, evolve?  Otherwise what’s the point of anything?  So we investigate how south node holds the information from our past lives and encourages us to take the easy way out of most situations.  It feels wickedly ‘comfortable’ ,just like your old slippers.

There is no growth without conscious effort and we will be stuck in our old patterns doomed to repeat the wheel of karma without any progress, until we come to understand how the North Node leads us forward.

If Saturn were nearer to us than it is it might look like this.

Forward progress begins again….most especially after mercury goes direct early September.

Happy Birthday Virgo!

Om Shanti, Om

ps. I don’t remember where I got that photo. I’ll credit you if you let me know who you are.

Most astrologers focus on time.  The questions that begin with ‘when’ are innumerable.  The ability to analyze the present moment, the past and the future using a natal horoscope  reveals larger patterns that would otherwise go unnoticed.

In 1986 -ish I attended a weekend workshop in CT taught by Jim Lewis, the pioneer of what is today called Astro*Carto*Graphy. (Where you were born holds equal weight with when you were born You are the intersection of time, place, and DNA)  This 3 day course was an amazing intellectual exercise with stimulating and provocative material.  I soaked it up.  But, unlike a natal (time) chart, the calculations necessary for a ACG map were impossible.  I would have to be satisfied with theory.  In 1989 astrological software became available. I immediately purchased a computer and the proprietary software that had just been released.

Theory could be tested now, first hand.  I calculated hundreds of maps & charts for myself, family, friends looking for the places on the planet that showed up in significant ways.  All  personal traveling became infused with curiosity. How would the planetary energies  manifest in different locations.    I’ve gathered up a few amazing stories over the years to illustrate my research.  On April 9, the Astrological Society of Princeton will host a lecture on Sunday and I look forward to sharing my research there.

This May I will bFloridaastromape spending 3 weeks, nearly a lunar cycle, on a ‘new’ line of my personal astromap,  the paran of Saturn and Chiron .  Looking around the globe I see that although I may have crossed this line a few times I ‘ve only crossed it and never spent much time there, not nearly enough to absorb/recognize the ‘energy/vibration/prana/chi’.   Obviously I am in for a new experience.

Saturn lines aren’t necessarily fun places to spend time.  Saturn’s influence is always serious, studious, and disciplined.  Saturn doesn’t do anything easy.  And, Saturn is slow.  If Saturn stood alone at this Florida location I may not have chosen to visit there.  But paran lines reflect a relationship between 2 planets, and in Salt Springs, FL and locales nearby, Saturn intersects with Chiron, and that combination is one I am cautiously curious to experience.

The nature of my visit there is Saturnian which bodes well for my stay at this newly established ashram with a world recognized Guru. I have volunteered for Seva there.  It’s location on this particular line seems quite fortuitous and prescient.  I’ll let you know more when I come back.

AstroCartography Karma Saturn

Much has been written about this giant in the sky. He has a heavy reputation and carries the weight of responsibility whereever he goes. Whether you follow the Vedic or the Western system of astrology, Saturn marks time passing. He is both the measuring stick and the obstacle, creating boundaries and limitations everywhere. Perhaps all those rings that surround the planet reminding us that all of us are tied up somehow?

Many excellent astrologers have written extensively about Saturn and by all means do your own research.

Saturn’s cycle around the sun takes approximately 28 years give or take a few months. If you divide 28 by 4 you get the infamous Seven-Year Cycle that psychologists and economists have always cautioned us about. And, it’s true. Every 7 years Saturn reaches a particular place in it’s orbit which creates a particular tension in either our relationships, our career, our health, or our family. Every 7 years, a big decision needs to be made.

The study of the Saturn cycle in more detail provides us with a lot more detail about that 7th year.

Saturn is represented within the Mulabandha, the first chakra. Saturn is also represented by our bones and joints, particularly the hips and knees. It makes sense to me that the lord of the clock has rulership over the parts of our body that ‘move us forward’ …or not. Feeling stuck is a common symptom of saturn’s effects.

Every 28th year we get to reset the clock. Saturn has moved thru a complete cycle and returned to where it was at the time of your birth.

As we age, we get to add whatever wisdom we have gained to the similar circumstances coming around today. Yoga therapy is helpful here.

mission bellSaturn is at 29 degrees of Virgo in the tropical zodiac.  We’ve discussed endings here and here and here.  Endings, the balsamic phase, the 29th degree, the mutable signs, the 12th house, all have a common intention towards completion.  You have to have an ending if there’s going to be a beginning.  This isn’t high math………….it’s just the way it works.

Cycles of Becoming, The Planetary Pattern of Growth by Alexander Ruperti is probably one of the best books I’ve ever read on the study of cycles, phases , and patterns.

Here’s what he writes for age 56-63.

Phase 9.  Possibility of 3rd birth in the Uranian cycle. Demonstration of the capacity to focus the spiritual quality of being inherent at birth, through the personality.  New spiritual activities or, negatively, further crystallization of mind and feeling responses.

He goes on to write that after 63 we move towards, “conscious preparation for the afterlife….or senility”

If you’re coming around to 30, 60 or 90 years of age (rounding off the numbers for simplicity….consult a professional astrologer for your exact dates.) you’re probably approaching The Saturn Return. A return is when a transiting planet arrives at the same place it was in when you were born. Every year around your birthday you have a Solar Return.

Volumes have been written about the Saturn Return and I encourage you to ‘google’ the term and do your own research. I have a list compiled at librarything.com and as soon as I develop some more technical skills I’ll share it with you. However, be prepared. You may not like what you read. Saturn has a reputation of bringing us face to face with cold, hard reality.

If you move thru this transition time with consciousness there are some very definite rewards to be gained if you are willing to work hard. It is a time for discipline and patience.

The Saturn Return presents us with choice points: critical decisions are considered, and changes can be implemented ……consciously and/or unconsciously.

All that said, the focus of this post is on the ~3 year period of time that precedes the return, beginning somewhere around the ages 27, 57, or 87 approximate.

saturn6_cassini If you’re coming around to 30, 60 or 90 years of age (rounding the numbers off to prioritize ‘concept’), you’re probably approaching a time period that astrologer’s call the Saturn Return.

Volumes have been written about the Saturn Return and I encourage you to Google the term and start reading. However, be prepared. You may not like what you read. Saturn has a reputation of bringing us face to face with cold, hard reality.

If you stay with it though, there are some very substantial rewards to be gained, and they’re always worth whatever efforts you make. We can talk more about the essential meaning of the planet later. Remember, these  are years when critical decisions are being made……consciously and/or unconsciously. Take your time. Move slow.  Demonstrate Patience.

The 3 year period of time that precedes the return, beginning somewhere around the ages 27, 57, or 87 approximate is also a part of the cycle that deserves attention. The balsamic phase of the Saturn cycle lasts a whole lot longer than the balsamic phase of the moon. The balsamic phase of the moon is ~3 days compared to the 3+years of Saturn’s balsamic phase.

If you are currently moving thru the balsamic phase of Saturn then it’s time to do some serious clutter-cleaning. Prepare by creating some ’empty space’ for Saturn to fill.

Clutter shows up everywhere.  We get cluttered physically, mentally emotionally,  and every other way that you can imagine.  This is the time to recognize the places in your life where you are: stuck, limited, over-responsible, under responsible, too serious, not serious enough. Re-define your relationship to time and re-set your personal biological clock.
(You can read about the balsamic phase of a cycle here to better understand the mood of these 3 years. You might also find some practical suggestions of appropriate actions to take during this time. Up until now we’ve been applying these phase definitions to the lunar cycle. However, in actuality we can apply these phases to any repeating cycle.)

Among other things the Saturn cycle describes our relationship to time.

That’s Huge!

How we measure & prioritize our time, both as a culture & as individually,  defines us as surely as anything else on this planet.

How we behave towards ourselves and each other is often a response to the often ignored subtle details of time *management*.  Check it out yourself.

The position of Saturn in your chart establishes the beginning of your ‘life pattern’ that will unfold over the next 28-30 years, and then repeat itself one or two more times before you pass on giving you specified times for growth and development. Learning to tell time by cycles and phases can be much less stressful than telling time by years, clocks & calendars.

The Vedic Astrologers have their own rendition of a Saturn Cycle. They call it Sade Sati and it comes at a completely different period of time than the western Saturn return. The jyotishi’s measure this period  in the chart when transiting saturn begins to move into the sign that precedes the natal moon sign. So, for instance, if your natal vedic moon is in Cancer , Sade Sati begins when transiting Saturn moves into Gemini and stays in effect until it gets to Leo. Hrmpf. That’s a really long time. I know. I just completed it and Saturn has truly ruled the roost in my world. Unfortunately for me, I now at the opening act of my western Saturn return.  I guess I still have a lot of time management to learn.

What I love about the philosophy inherent in vedic astrology is that it prescribes remedies. The ancient schools prescribed mantra, ritual, chanting, gemstones, herbs, and yogic practices. The intention was to make peace with the planets (gods & goddesses). In this way we could minimize negative events and engage in activities that bring joy & pleasure.

Stay tuned for more on this topic.

3_9_1993 Trophy I was cleaning out an old file drawer the other day and came across the award certificates I received during winter/spring 1993.  For, me these pieces of paper symbolize a few of my most heart-felt achievements.  I won three Toastmaster’s Speech Contests in a row, qualifying me to compete in a state event. It was quite an experience and the memory of it continues to provide me with confidence and courage in speaking my truth.

Speaking our truth is an activity which requires a healthy fifth chakra.  Speaking our truth also falls under the practice of Satya, one of the yamas of yoga.  Speaking our truth is an important function even though it is often restrained, repressed, and resistant.  The obstacles can be from outside of ourselves…ie: government, authorities, etc., or the obstacles can be more internally based.  It really doesn’t matter, the task remains the same……..speak truth.

My speech was seriously out of the box for such a conservative, traditional bunch of people like those who attended the regular meetings.  I chose to deliver “A Call to Awaken”, an astrologer’s plea.

In 1993 the world was reeling from the multiple conjunctions of Saturn, Uranus, & Neptune.  The paradigm was changing and as far as I could see, the world needed to know about this and get ready.   Hmmm, I wonder if any one but me remembers that speech?

Today, we are at a major turning point that began then.  Saturn is moving into the 180 degree zone with first Neptune and in the next few years, Uranus.  What was birthed in ’93 is coming to fruition now.

I don’t know about you, but my life is changing in ways I couldn’t have imagined back then, and yet, I did.  I spent a lot of time in ’93 envisioning, vision questing, and pondering the ‘perfect’ future and what that would ‘feel’ like.  I think it worked?!?!?!?!?
