Hi Everyone….  Longevity is the one of the topics of this panel discusssion…and it’s made for some interesting conversations in our yoga classes.  I  highly recommend listening to it if you are of the Boomer generation like me.  The young one you see is the CEO of Facebook.  Very interesting.

Robert Sapolsky, who is one of the panelists, wrote the book, Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers and it was required reading for certification in Integrative Yoga Therapy (2000).  I couldn’t put it down.  It explained so much to me and informs my yoga still to this day.

…more later.

I began facilitating stress management classes around 1989,  but here’s a tidbit of information Ilearned in a recent YTT class on stress-management.

When they did all those studies to determine what is known as the fight or flight reaction they used men. After observation those were the words that were chosen (Fight/flight) to represent  the surges of adrenalin and cortisol as witnessed in a male human body. Fight. Flight. Sounds simple enough , and it’s quite true. Remember, that primal brain is still operational, despite modern evolution.

The tidbit though is about how a woman’s body responds to those same adrenal gland secretions.  Recently they duplicated the same studies and discovered that neither fight or flight were the most common responses for the females.  At All!  What had been observed  was that female bodies tended  more to Freeze during stressful conditions.  Think ‘deer in the headlights’ kind of reaction.

When I took a little survey among  my students, men & women, I discovered that The Freeze feels much more resonate with them than fighting or fleeing….not always, but most of the time.  Nearly all seemed to breathe a sigh of relief by just hearing that alternative F-word. (freeze)

Whatever. Stress is stressful. There’s no doubt about it. Yoga helps. Find a teacher that you resonate with. Go often. Relieve your stress. It’s good for everyone. Yoga Nidra tonite.

Come, The Door is Round and Open. (rumi)

Here’s some information on my studio.

7-500 astronomy

The Vernal or Spring Equinox is the time when the huge time clock in the sky resets itself for 0 degrees of Aries. It’s an ‘astronomical ‘measurement that for the most part is completely arbitrary and can happen on a different calendar date every year. The arbitrary part comes into play when you ask the question;

Where do you start to measure the circle?” Even if you’re an astrologer, it can be confusing because the Western astrologers start measuring at one place in the sky, and the Eastern astrologers measure the beginning a short 24 degrees behind(?)…..another relative term to consider since we’re moving in circles. Who’s ahead? Who’s behind? Who’s to say?!

Either way Zero Degrees of Aries = 0 degrees of Aries and the Sabian Symbol for this time provides us with the image of “a woman just risen from the sea. A seal is embracing her.” Nice. More on this later.

Amazingly, we are moving into Daylight Savings Time earlier this year (???)….so we’re guaranteed to be ‘off’ our center for a while….. Since clock time is so detached from cosmic time conflict must arise in our body/mind/emotions/spirit. You can bet on it if you are so inclined.

At least the astrologers are consistent! Thanks be.

They, the astrologers, established their time-keeping methods eons ago and nothing has altered it….which isn’t the same thing as saying that time hasn’t been altered. S_ _ T H_ _ _ _ NS!

It is interesting to note that the ‘atomic clock’ has had to be re-adjusted more frequently in recent times than in the centuries that have preceded us.

On March 20, 2008 at, 1:49 am, DST the Vernal Equinox will occur. At the same time the moon will be in 13 degrees of Virgo.

The Sabian Symbol for this time is the image of ” a powerful statesman overcomes a state of political hysteria”.

Wow!

Sounds interesting…especially considering the fact that I’m writing this a few days before the Texas/Ohio primary’s.

Hmmm.

So….

……be your own astrologer and consider how those two images are showing up in your life these days.

Equinox’s generally point us in the direction we need to move towards for at least 3 months. (could be longer….it all depends on where these zodiac degrees fall in your own personal charts and how you keep time)

For me, the Equinox will be a 9th house affair with the moon activating my 3rd house at the same time.

Om shanti.

The Peruvian shamans living high up in the Andes Mountains have come down to tell us that a new species of human being is about to appear. They call this being ‘Homo Luminous’. They tell us that forerunners of Homo Luminous are already among us right now. Like Cro-Magnon Man of 26,000 years ago, the last time that we passed through the cusp of Aquarius, so too now a new human is emerging. This new human will possess entirely new qualities that we do not have. The great Avatars, Jesus Christ, Krishna and many others may have early arrivals for this newly emerging species. Aquarius is the only one of the four quadrent signs that is symbolically represented by a human, and this human carries a container of water. This symbology is interesting as DNA can only be activated in water. So even the symbolic nature of the sign of Aquarius seems to suggest a change in the genetic structure of the human race.

Our spiritual existence is really a unique combination of free will and predestination. While we possess the ability to act freely within the moment, there is little we can do about the larger cycles of time and the qualities that emerge at the cusp of each of the four great signs. So as the hand on the great cosmic time clock passes into Aquarius one can expect massive changes to occur. While the ancient art of alchemy is concerned with many aspects of our existence including the extraction of light from plants and minerals, the transformation of the dark lead of our physical being into the pure gold of enlightenment and much more, alchemy also is a symbolic ontology concerned with the observation in the changes of the “quality” of time through the 25, 920 years-long duration of the Great Year.

The world is changing. The past will disappear and history will become legend and finally myth. Our destination is unknown. The only thing we know for sure is that it will change.

I lifted that whole quote off this webpage, an excellent resource for time comprehension.

Consider this……………….

Man’s First Breath

The respiratory system is the only system of the body that we can take control of. We can: lengthen, shorten, hold, and regulate our breathing according to our will. Or, we can completely ignore it and it will still work.

You can’t do that with your digestive system, or your nervous system, or your endocrine system. The respiratory system is completely unique in that way.

Now consider the fact that the respiratory system is intimatly connected to your heart beat, pulse, and blood pressure. Logic suggests, that if we can control our breath we can affect our heart rate. Hmmmmm.

Let’s take it another step further.

It’s a known fact that when we are feeling fear, doubt, or uncertainty we tend to hold our breath. When we are living thru times of crisis, chaos, & turbulance our breathing patterns tend to shorten. What we do not realize is that when we constrict our breath in this way, the body retains the cellular memory of the fear, the doubt, and the turbulance. Energy gets blocked and we begin to reduce our ability to feel relaxed, joyful, and happy. It just happens.

Now multiply this over time and think about just how much of your life force energy you have repressed over the course of your life. Scary, isn’t it?

Over the year’s we’re addressed this issue in  our yoga classes & workshops. I’ve witnesses hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of people change their health, their outlook, and their behaviours just by practicing yoga breathing.   When our intention becomes the freedom from  the energetic holding patterns that prevent full aliveness.

If you’d like more information on it you might want to visit these websites……………….http://www.eupsychia.com/perspectives/defs/cell.html or http://www.breathwork.com/

What’s important to understand is that these practices benefit all of us, regardless of your personal history. Just the stress of daily living is enough for the body/mind to create these ‘holding’ patterns. So, find someone who facilitates yogic breathwork in your neighborhood and try it. The worst thing that can happen is that you’ll get a good rest and leave feeling completely relaxed. The best thing that can happen is that you’ll release some of the negative results of a life’s worth of holding.

Om shanti, om.

The Hundredth Monkey

by Ken Keyes, jr. The Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years.

In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkeys liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant.

An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers too.

This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists.

Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable.

Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.

Then something startling took place. In the autumn of 1958, a certain number of Koshima monkeys were washing sweet potatoes — the exact number is not known.

Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes.

Let’s further suppose that later that morning, the hundredth monkey learned to wash potatoes.

THEN IT HAPPENED!

By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them.

The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough!

But notice.

A most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea —

Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama began washing their sweet potatoes.

Thus, when a certain critical number achieves an awareness, this new awareness may be communicated from mind to mind.

Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way, it may remain the conscious property of these people.

But there is a point at which if only one more person tunes-in to a new awareness, a field is strengthened so that this awareness is picked up by almost everyone!
