Last week we experienced the Taurus New Moon…….a time for persistance, patience, and tending to the earthly, practical concerns of life. Food. Shelter. Water.

Now it’s time to Do Something….there’ll be time enough later for talking.

Today at 5:02pm EDT the moon will be in a 90 deg. angle relationship with the sun.

DO IT………………. NOW!

You gotta break some eggs to make an omlette.

Sabbath

Today & tomorrow all of us will be experiencing the balsamic phase of the moon ending on Wednesday at 3;27 EDT when the New Moon cycle at 26Taurus begins. It’s time to dive in again and clean out the internal clutter.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to meet Wayne Muller who is an ordained minister, therapist and author of Sabbath, Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in our Busy Lives. He definitly understood the symbolic meaning of the balsamic phase of the moon. He agrees that, without this time of introverted activity we are doomed to remain a stressed out, disease-ridden, self-centered culture showing little compassion or understanding for others. Whew. It stressed me out just writing that sentence!

The balsamic phase of the moon as I have previously written about here and here is the time to direct our attention to our inner world and our inner life. Many people don’t have a clue what that means which illustrates the need to educate and encourage this practice. Wayne Muller writes about Sabbath from both the Jewish & the Christian perspective. One celebrates this restful time on Saturday, the other on Sunday. I have personally discovered as an astrologer/yogini that using the balsamic time of the moon for my inward journeys to be extrodinarily auspicious.

We on this planet Earth are intimately connected to the cycle & phases of the Moon, our closest neighbor in the sky. We know that the moon affects the tides thru it’s gravitational pull on Earth. We know that we are more than 80% water. It’s not a gigantic leap to realize that we too are affected by that same gravitational pull. And, finally, we know that since the dawning of mankind we have watched and scheduled our lives by the consistent rhythms of the sun & moon. Afterall, isn’t that where our calendar came from? But, I digress.

It does make it somewhat challenging to withdraw from our daily lives if the balsamic phase falls on a Monday & Tuesday! Our contemporary worklife does not have a flexible enough schedule to accomodate the fluctuations of the lunar cycle. We are a solar based society, unlike some of the other cultures on our planet. (See this article on East vs. West astrology)

However, where there’s a will there’s a way. One of the ways I make sure that I acknowledge my balsamic tasks is to step up my yoga & meditation practice during these days. You might want to do the same and attend a class or two. Taking time out to be in nature is another way to celebrate this time. Journaling, napping, day-dreaming, are some other ways to honor yourself and build up your internal bank account. Practice ‘not doing’ as the yogi’s would say. Just Be. You will find that you are even more productive when the new moon comes back around if you take out some time for yourself now.

Saturn is currently squaring my natal Sun.  Ugh.  It feels like being trapped within concrete walls with only a small little penknife to chip my way out.  I suppose there is a postive side to this transit, there always is a good side.  However, today I just feel stuck.

Saturn

Just before the transit came to exactitude I spent a week at Kripalu Center attending the Symposium on Yoga Therapy.  It was wonderful to be with a community of yoga professionals who are focused on using these ancient practices towards health & wellness.  There are some really good things happening out there! I learned a lot.  And, I also realized how much I already know…………..it’s always good to be validated!

Yoga Therapy is definitely an up and coming modality that is beginning to receive recognition from the medical establishment.  In my own practice a few of my clients are getting reimbursed by their insurance companies for their sessions with me.  And, their doctors are writing prescriptions for Yoga Therapy!

What sets my practice apart from most of the other yoga therapists is the use of astrology in my analysis.  Looking at a clients natal chart along with current transits & progressions can provide a lot of information that you wouldn’t find anywhere else.  As soon as this concrete wall crumbles I hope to complete some of the articles on this and post them here or on my website.  But until then……….I’ll continue to practice procrastination!

………………dharma and karma and how that plays out in my life. The last time I pondered this polarity was here, in Arjuna’s tale in the Bhagavad Gita. Destiny, fate, call it what you will. We have ALL recognized the appearance of such events in our lives. Some of us recognize these synchronicities in their personal lives, and neglect to see same in their public lives. Others vice versa. Are you thoroughly confused now? You might be……..that’s the nature of polarities ( and dualities, too). It’s enought to make your head spin! Then you throw into the mix all the air sign people( Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) with whom duality & polarity are a daily/minute-to- minute struggle/agony they live with. Whew………………enough all ready. The futility of pondering duality is immeasurable.
Time to sit.

The differences between Eastern & Western Astrology parallel the differences in the cultures.

In the East spirituality is a priority in one’s life. And, spiritual practices can be performed in solitary, in groups, in organized religions, in beautiful architecture, nature, or any place one may find oneself. Spirit is a constant priority, sometimes surpassing food.

Western astrology  is more focused on the material world and seekers ask a lot of ‘how & when’ questions of life rather than the who, what, or why questions of the East.  Of course, that is ‘this’ astrologer’s perspective to date.  Astrology can be very ‘fluid’, allowing for reversals, retrogrades, and repetitious activity.

Western astrology uses a hypothetical division of the cosmos and their charts look like this.

Western charta western style chart

Eastern astrology measures it’s cycles from what can be actually seen in the sky. It’s a question of what is real and what is unreal…..the eternal questions of spirit. Their charts of the cosmos look like this.

Vedic Chartan eastern style chart

Western astrology recognizes technology as a force in the world and that is symbolized by it’s recognition of the Outer Planets….those that require a telescope to be seen. Eastern Astrology continues to respect Saturn as the outermost boundary of our universe. What cannot be seen with the naked eye, does not exist. Sounds like another profound question for those on a spiritual path. If you can’t see it, is it there? Reminds me of the sound of a tree falling in the woods, or one hand clapping.

Perhaps you can now understand that the study of astrology can be a study of life in the same profound way as philosophy or law.

And yet, the practical application of astrological data can also make one’s life much easier in many mundane ways. Choosing good times, understanding people and our relationships, finding suitable locations, and discovering insights about oneself are more ways in which astrology can help.

Astrology philosophy

In this post I published an article I wrote on the Balsamic Phase of the Moon. As I write this, the moon is at 04GE which means that I am in the balsamic phase of my personal lunar cycle. The personal cycle is the one that the general public can’t see. It’s determined by the position of the moon at birth and my moon is at 04CA. The moon today is 30 degrees away from that place, ergo the balsamic phase.

The task here is to take care of my inner self and attend to my inner world. Most of the time I enjoy these days. Sometimes they are painful, frustrating, and downright boring. I’m not sure yet how this particular balsamic phase will play out.

My natal moon lives in the 12th house of my birthchart so that makes it even more imperative that I clean out the internal clutter of my life during this time. The difficulty is that you have to find where that clutter is before you can clean it out!

I’ve spent countless hours in meditation, journaling, consulting with those who are wise, and engaging in various solitary practices that force me to look at myself. Today, at 57 years of age, I can honestly say, I’m okay. Certainly, there have been, and continue to be some rough spots….that’s called life. However, there’s a lot more empty, clear space than there was a few decades ago and these balsamic phases have become restful, peaceful respites from the world.

So, it looks like it might be a very, nice spring day today. Perhaps a walk on the beach and some conversation with the seagulls.

Next week I’ll be offering an all day workshop on Feng Shui and I’m really excited about getting back into this venue of ancient wisdom. There’s a lot of good stuff in the wisdom and practices from the Far East, and we could learn a lot.

Feng Shui goes back thousands of years and is closely aligned with the philosophical and spiritual traditions of it’s time. The earliest school of feng shui, the form school, contains the rituals and wisdom of the Tao. (see my previous post and click on the link at the bottom) Later on when the Compass School traditions came into favor, Confucious and his philosophy was the dominant spiritual path. Today, Buddhism is favored and as a result the Black Hat Sect of Feng Shui is the most popular form.

Do a google search of some of these terms and see what comes up. In the workshop we’ll be spending the morning exploring the Black Hat path. Then, in the afternoon we’ll look at the modern-day version of the Compass School which includes Local Space Astrology & Astro-Cartography.

Look for future posts on this popular and powerful subject.

In the meantime:

Look at this map of the USA. It’s set for approximately 6pm, EST, 3/18/07.

solar map usa

The vertical lines on the map represent the orbital path  of each planets as it crosses the earth.  You might want to think of the path as a line of “chi” energy.

The horizonal lines that I’ve chosen to display, are called parans and represent the places where planetary lines cross each other.

The theory here is that different places on earth, have different energy patterns at different times. If we know our natal horoscopes we can convert that information to this mapping technique and discover where on earth we might thrive and live our lives more _______________. (fill in the blank).

These personal maps can be scaled down to our state, city, and neighborhood locales offering incredible information for personal growth.  One can even use what’s called Local Space Astrology for the inside of our homes, schools, hospitals, etc.  Then we use these lines of energy to arrange the inside to be in aliggnment with the outside.

On Sunday a Solar Eclipse will occur in the last degrees of Pisces. Solar Eclipses always occur at the time of a New Moon and usually fall within 2 weeks of a Lunar Eclipse. So much has been written across the net on this that I shall leave it to other astrologers to fill you in.

What I’d like to draw your attention to however, are these few days prior to the New Moon/Eclipse. The balsamic phase of the moon occurs just before a new moon and has it’s own indomitable reputation. That being said here’s an article I wrote a while ago on this lunar phase.

Astrology consciousness lunar phases Miscellaneous The Lunar Cycle

Re-ordering the Solar System

Astronomers often disagree over what it is exactly that they’re seeing. Recently, we’ve watched them downgrade planets to dwarf planets, and discover new dwarf planets that share our Sun. It takes a long time for science to prove something. Astrologers are also cautious when faced with the task of interpreting the symbolism and metaphysical energy of a new orbiting body. What the astrologers do is to look closely at the current conditions on earth and begin to weave those details into the mythology of the named planet. What’s so amazing is that when one looks backward to the history, it is so clear how each planet and it’s astrological interpretations are ideally reflective of the conditions on earth.

Eris was officially announced to the world in July of 2005. In mythology she was the goddess of strife, discord, contention and rivalry. Hmmm, look around. See anything? The State of The Planet, perhaps? This is how it works when a new energy enters into our consciousness. Because Eris is so very far away she tends to remain in a zodiac sign for a very, very, very long time. She’s been traveling thru Aries now since April 1924 and she’ll be in that sign until 2045. Where is Aries in your natal chart?

Eris, The Goddess of Discord

One way to think about this would be to draw an analogy to the place where you live. Imagine for a moment that tomorrow when you wake up your home has suddently doubled in size with brand new rooms you’ve never seen or entered into before. It might take some time to ‘process’ that new information!

For now there’s nothing more to think about other than to figure out where in your life are you experiencing strife, discord & rivalry and how to deal with it. I suggest attending a yoga class.
